About
What is Whisky Rating ?
As the name of this blog suggests, this is a place to rate whiskies (and other spirit drinks as well). There are already plenty of sites out there that have ratings and tasting notes for whiskies. What they all have in common is that they reflect only the views of a single individual or a small group of persons.
Whisky Rating is supposed to be a place where all whisky enthusiasts can put down their ratings and tasting notes in order to create a large whisky database that can be useful for many purposes like having a benchmark to compare one’s own score to or for making buying decisions. It is the combination of statisically relevant scores combined with a collection of tasting notes that will make this site unique, sufficient user participation provided.
For every whisky bottling that is tasted, a blog entry is created. Users can rate the whisky with a ten star system and add their tasting notes or anything else they want to say about the bottling as a comment. Whiskies are categorized by their region and for Scotch there is a category for every distillery.
There is also a proper blog section where I – and maybe some guest writers – will post from time to time. But the focus of this site will always be on the ratings themselves. This is also the reason why this site is not supposed to be a full-fledged whisky community, although it obviously is a community project.
In March 2010 I added a forum to the site with the main purpose of offering a platform for trading whisky samples. Of course users can also discuss any whisky topic they have in mind, but this forum is not meant to be compete with the other whisky forums already in existence.
At the time of writing, I am 41 years old. I am a professional stamp dealer from Germany (living near Munich) with an ever-growing interest for whisky. I started to make tasting notes not very long ago, so my “track record” is not comparable to some of the other maltheads or whisky pros out there.
Surfing the net for help in making buying decisions, I realized that all available information on whisky bottlings is rather subjective, and you need to read many people’s opinions to get an obective picture. This is how the idea for this site was born: to bundle many people’s whisky experiences on one place.
Before going online, I added some of my own ratings and tasting notes to the site, and I will keep doing so. My notes may not be as elaborate as the ones from more experienced whisky afficionados, but this is absolutely in line with the concept of the site. The real picture will only unfold when more and more mosaic pieces are added.
