Port Ellen 2nd Annual Release

by Oliver Klimek on December 22, 2009

24 yo from 1978 – 59.35%

My Tasting Notes:

Nose: Quite “farmy” at first, compost and even a trace of manure, with water it becomes smoky and maritime
Palate: Medium peat, tropical fruit,  a hint of coconut and a pinch of salt
Finish: Extremely long, salty fruity peat
Overall: This is an extremely complex malt with aromas that seem to come and go in waves during time. Flavours are so concentrated that you could  delay it 1:1 with neutral spirit, water it down to drinking strength and still have an excellent dram. It must be celebrated rather than just drunk.

Score: 94/100 – No price information as this is a collector’s bottle

Port Ellen 1979/2009 Cask 1654 – Old Bothwell

by Oliver Klimek on July 19, 2009

52%

My Tasting Notes

Nose: Smoke, ham, slightly medicinal, gets stronger with a bit of water, then citrus notes emerge
Palate: Mild peat, spicy tannines, medicinal influence gets stronger with water, both a bit salty and sweet
Finish: Very long and salty-sweet
Overall: No peat monster but perfectly balanced with the wood influence caused by long maturation. Both complex and subtle as no aroma tries to dominate.

Score: 93/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$
