St. Magdalene Cask No. 20 – 1975/2003

by Oliver Klimek on October 11, 2009

G&M Reserve – 49%

My Tasting Note

Nose: Slightly smoky, caramel, leather, spices
Palate: Ginger, tea, a bix waxy, “farmy”, some caramel and a touch of lemon
Finish: Long with a bit of smoke
Overall: They don’t make Lowlanders like this anymore. Very full-bodied, noticeably smoky and with a kind of earthy spicyness that is very unusual for today’s palates. Very complex.

Score: 89/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

Auchentoshan Select

40%

My Tasting Notes

Nose: Weak, a bit of vanilla
Palate: Very spirity, flat, no much to speak of
Finish: Short and meaningless
Overall: The only good thing I can say about this expression is that it is discontinued. If you happen to find a bottle, avoid it! This is a perfect example of an NAS statement used to disguise immature whisky.

Score: 55/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

My Tasting Notes

Nose: A bit timid first but gets stronger later. Cut grass, Vanilla, later ripe fruit.
Palate: Slight sherry, mint, chocolate, rather spicy
Finish: Long and spicy, leaves you with a whiff of smoke.
Overall: Very complex, you can find something different in every dram. But still not my favorite.

Score: 82/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

The standard bottling from a silent still still readily available – 40%

My Tasting Notes

Nose: Surprisingly strong, vanilla, slightly fruity, a hint of lowland grass
Palate: Very fruity with quite strong grassy notes, a tiny bit of bitterness though
Finish: Medum long, not very spectacular.
Overall: A peculiar grassy character that some may find to be not their taste. I quite enjoyed it although it’s not a real winner.

Score: 73/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$
