Mannochmore 1992/2006 Cadenhead

by Oliver Klimek on March 6, 2010

Sherry Butt – 54.6%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Cognac
Nose: Acetone, even a hint of vinegar, rum soaked raisins.
Palate: Very fruity, almost like rum soaked gummi bears and yes, vinegar
Finish: Very long and rummy
Overall: This is sherry gone crazy, just too much of it in my opinion. The chemical nose puts me off as well. But I am sure some will love this dram.

Allt-Á-Bhainne 1995/2006 James MacArthur

by Oliver Klimek on March 4, 2010

Bourbon Cask #140864 – 58.9%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Pale straw
Nose: Quite weak and grainy, a bit of vanilla and lemon, becomes a bit stronger with water.
Palate: Vanilla, honey, nuts, a hint of lemon, very spirity wihtout water.
Finish: Medium long, nutty and a little sweet
Overall: A very light-bodied malt, might be suitable as an aperitive but has not much to offer overall. Needs much water to overcome the sharpness of the spirit.

Score: 72/100 – Price Tag $$$$$ – Value for your Money $$$$$

Coleburn 1983/2009 Whisky Agency

by Oliver Klimek on March 1, 2010

Bourbon cask – 49.5%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Straw
Nose: Needs very long to develop, give it at least 20 minutes. Then very pleasant with pineapple, and apples, slightly grassy, and slightly floral.
Palate: Various tropical fruit, vanilla, a bit herbal with a whith of smoke.
Finish: Long and fruity with just a minimal amount of smoke involved.
Overall: This rare dram needs a lot of time but rewards you with an interesting fruity taste experience. The minimal smokiness gives it a bit of an old-fashioned character. Very enjoyable but not a canditate for the bang-for-yor-buck list

Blended Scotch Whisky – 40%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Straw
Nose: Fresh and a bit spirity, citrus, grain, vanilla
Palate: A hint of caramel and nuts joins the aromas from the nose
Finish: Short taste, long spirit
Overall: You can tell that this is very young. Much too young for my taste. It tastes almost like a German Korn. But at least it does not seem to be coloured.

Macduff 1990/2009 Whisky Doris

by Oliver Klimek on February 18, 2010

Sherry Hogshead 1422 – 55.7%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Amber
Nose: Big, dried figs ,cocoa, raisins, a whiff of vinegar
Palate: Quite herbal, nuts, caramel, cassis, figs, some chili
Finish: Long and  spicy
Overall: Needs time and water to open up. Great nose, but the palate is too herbal for my taste, and even with quite a lot of water it is pretty “hot”.

Springbank CV

by Oliver Klimek on February 11, 2010

46%

My Tasting Notes:

Color: Gold
Nose: “Farmy” at the beginning, becoming more maritime and slightly fruity (orange) over time
Palate: Slightly peaty, a strange mix of caramel and chili, oranges
Finish: Rather long,  spicy smoke
Overall: The nose takes a while to open up and actually becomes very pleasant, but the palate cannot quite live up to that. The spicyness is too dominant for my taste as it is not sufficiently counterbalanced by the other flavour components. There are notable similarities to the Hazelburn CV which I definitively prefer over the Springbank.

The new flagship malt from Glenmorangie – 46%

My Tasting Notes:

Nose: Ripe fruit, chocolate, exotic spices
Palate: Coffee, chocolate, dark berries, ginger, orange zest, cinnamon
Finish: Long and spicy
Overall: A very good malt, well-balanced, full-bodied and very complex. But I think the price is a bit too much on the expensive side.

Buy at the Whisky ExchangeNewmake from Speyside – 50%

My Tasting Notes:

Nose: A strong pear aroma joined by a bit of malt and a slight floral note.
Palate: Peppered attack, then quite sweet, pears, more pears and malt
Finish: Very long, fruity and sweet
Overall: You would not beleive that this is supposed to become whisky once. It reminds more of a pear eau de vie than anything else. Quite enjoyable in its own right though, but with a solid price tag.

Kilchoman Autumn Release 2009

by Oliver Klimek on January 27, 2010

3 yo – 46%

My Tasting Notes:

Nose: Camp fire, farmyard, sea breeze, citrus fruit
Palate: Peat, salt, very fruity, a bit musty
Finish: Quite long, fruity peat
Overall: It’s still very immature but shows a lot of promise for the future. Too close to newmake to be fully enjoyable for me at this stage of maturation.
